Francesco Montorsi MD FRCS (Hon)

Francesco Montorsi is Full Professor of Urology and Director of the School of Specialization in Urology at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University and is Director of the Operating Unit of Urology at IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Italy. 

Prof. Montorsi graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Medicine from the University of Milan, where he also completed his Specialty in Urology. Prof. Montorsi also completed his Specialty in Andrology at the University of Pisa.

The main areas of clinical and surgical interest are uro-oncology with a focus on minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of prostate, bladder, and kidney cancer and benign prostatic hypertrophy. In particular, Prof. Montorsi is internationally recognized for his experience in robotic surgery for the treatment of cancers of the genito-urinary tract (prostate, bladder, and kidney) and endoscopic Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP).

Prof. Montorsi's scientific activity has focused on the study of prostate and bladder cancer, sexual dysfunction, prostatic hypertrophy, laser therapy of urinary obstruction from prostatic hypertrophy, and robotic surgery. Prof. Montorsi has authored more than 1880 articles published in international scientific journals (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/?term=%22Montorsi%2C+Francesco%22%5BAuthor%5D+) and several chapters in medical treatises. With an H-index of 156 (https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=it&user=D2_wd3wAAAAJ), Prof. Montorsi has been included in the list of the world's most cited researchers by Clarivate Analytics

Prof. Montorsi was also Editor-in-Chief from 2006 to 2013 and is now Editor Emeritus of European Urology official journal of the European Urology Society (EAU) and also the surgical scientific journal with the highest impact factor internationally.

Prof. Montorsi received in 1998 the Crystal Matula Award, given by the European Association of Urology to the young researcher under 40 years of age with the best international scientific production. More recently, Prof Montorsi was appointed Commendatore della Repubblica Italiana (Commander of the Italian Republic) by President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella.
The Royal College of Surgeons of England, the official professional body that gathers all surgeons in England, also awarded in November 2017 its highest honor - the Honorary Fellowship - to Prof. Montorsi for his merits in urological surgery. In May 2018, Prof. Montorsi received the Hugh Hampton Young Award from the American Urological Association for scientific contribution to the study of Urologic Oncology and Andrology and leadership in urologic academic activity. 


In March 2019, he received the Frans Debruyne Lifetime Achievement Award from the European Association of Urology for his contribution to the activities of the Association. In May 2021, he was asked to deliver the Ramon Guiteras Lecture at the annual congress of the American Urological Association. In July 2023 the Professor was also awarded the 2000 Galileo Prize for Medical Science. Also in 2023, Prof Montorsi received the Mostafa M. Elhilali Award from the Société Internationale d'Urologie for his scientific merits and ethical standing.
