This study explored the effectiveness of ureteral access sheaths (UAS) in the treatment of kidney stones through ureteroscopy (URS), and examines how the use of UAS affects the risk of postoperative infectious complications.
The study, conducted in 369 stone patients treated with URS, revealed that UAS can significantly reduce the risk of septic shock, a serious infectious complication. However, a clear benefit in preventing fever or sepsis was not observed. The results suggest that further research is needed to better understand whether UAS-mediated decrease in fluid resorption load can protect against the risks of serious infectious complications.
Baseline characteristics of patients remain crucial factors in predicting infectious sequelae.
This study opens new perspectives for the treatment of kidney stones, emphasizing the importance of individualized evaluation for each patient.
